To say Caleb Moretz made an impression at The Showcase in Warman would be an understatement.

Based on being seen at the event last month, Moretz put the finishing touches on a scholarship with RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) earlier this week.  “The first time I talked to them was in Warman,” says Moretz, who has gotten off to a blistering start with 9-goals and 5-assists in 8-games played.

“They said they liked how I hunt the puck and use my speed and vision.  I seemed to check the boxes they were looking for and with what they are trying to build.”

Moretz, who hails from Fairbanks AK, is in his second SJHL season with Flin Flon.  Last year he had 12-goals and 29-assists in 57-games. “I am, definitely, more comfortable and more used to the speed of the SJHL game this year and I know the names of players on other teams on who to watch for and pay attention to.  Mentally, I find I can process my decisions a little better this year. I also know I don’t have time to maybe do an extra crossover or chip the puck right away instead of hanging on to it.”

Bomber head coach Mike Reagan says Moretz has become a fan favorite because they recognize that Moretz, “Plays really hard and plays the right way.  He has a full 200 foot game and you never question what he brings to the table on a nightly basis.”

Moretz has also narrowed down his academic areas of interest.  He’s been focused on being a veterinarian for most of his life, but he’s also taken a liking to economics.  “I have always been fascinated with animals and how they can’t talk to you when they are injured, so you have to go in and diagnose without any information and still solve the problem without them verbally communicating the way humans can.  I’ve also always had a love for animals. As far as economics are concerned, I’ve been influenced on social media where you see all of these platforms that people have and I don’t know how any of it works and I’m intrigued by that. How much should you invest and understanding what to spend and what to save.  It’s just something I don’t know anything about and want to learn.”

Moretz will head to Rochester, MN on a flydown immediately following the Bombers’ four game in five night road swing next weekend.  He’ll return in time for the Parents Weekend on the 19th.

RIT likes Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League players. Former Yorkton defensemen Regan Seiferling and Chase and Brady Norrish all suited up with the Tigers last year. The Norrish twins graduated. Seiferling is into his second year.
